Fernanda REYNS

(Belgium, 1957-)

When you take a closer look at Fernanda Reyns' work, you see that behind the large figures lies a host of small characters. There are hundreds of little circles where people, houses, children and trees are hiding, sometimes in front, sometimes behind, sometimes even inside. Originally, they were distinct figures. They have eyes, mouths, ears, hair and they wear jewellery.

Yet even if the meanings and contours are apparently lost, they still remain present. Fernanda enthrals us with a drawing that brings together an alliance of contemporary and ancient cultures; a sobriety and an abundance that simultaneously create an impression of a crowd and isolation.
