Jim KALISKI
(Belgium, 1929-2015)
Chaïm Kaliski, known as Jim, uses his hypermnesia to chronicle his youth in Brussels, which was greatly affected by the Second World War and the Holocaust. In the late 1980s, his younger sister, the visual artist Sarah Kaliski (1941-2010), advised him to draw his memories. Jim Kaliski then produced thousands of drawings, which can be found in the collections of the Jewish Museum of Belgium, the LaM (Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France) and the Dr. Guislain Museum (Ghent, Belgium). In 2024, the Art et marges museum acquired 45 drawings from the former Psyc'Art collection. While some of these works evoke the sensitive events of the war, many of them feature more light-hearted subjects, including an entire series devoted to Jacques Brel. In 2024, La 5e Couche publishing house produced a book devoted to Kaliski's drawings evoking the Second World War and the persecution of Jews in Belgium.
