Louis VAN BAELENS

(Belgium, 1956-)

For several years now, Louis Van Baelens has been drawing and painting bricks and brick walls with a disconcerting rigour and method. His compositions are reminiscent of certain Surrealist paintings. Like René Magritte and Salvador Dali, Louis Van Baelens cultivates the mystery of trompe-l'œil: brick walls cover other brick walls... "This is not a wall! His approach is all the more disturbing because he only paints and draws bricks, hundreds and thousands of bricks. Louis Van Baelens is active in the painting workshop at La Pommeraie (Quevaucamps).
