Madge GILL

(England, 1882-1961)

Madge Gill (London, UK) is one ofthe leading female figures inoutsider art. A mediumistic (or spiritualistic) artist, she said that she was guided by a spirit of the name of "Myrninerest which could be translatedas“My Inner Rest [Self] ” or “My innerest.” She started to draw write and embroider when she lostthe use of her left eye due to an illness. She workedvery rapidly all through the night by candlelight in a state close to a trance. It was only after she died in 1961 that hundreds of drawings were found piled up in cupboards and under the bed that would go on to enrich the world’s biggest outsider art collections.
