Pierre BONVOISIN

All we know about these sculpted chestnuts is the name of their creator: Pierre Bonvoisin. Each of Pierre Bonvoisin's sculptures consists of a reclining chestnut to which is glued a second upright chestnut, the flesh of which has been sculpted to form a face. In some of these sculptures, the artist has retained the brown bark of the chestnut, forming a small hood covering the sculpted head. Each sculpture is different, some have thicker heads while others have narrower heads, some have their eyes open while others do not, sometimes they look up or down, sometimes they look straight ahead. Some have a bigger nose, thicker cheeks, a smile or none at all.
