Willem VAN GENK

(Netherlands, 1927-2005)

Willem van Genk's work is marked by his fascination with the city and its means of transport. He creates views of bustling metropolises that combine several scenes through juxtaposition and collages. Signs and billboards are widely featured, as are models of trams which he creates from recycled materials. Typography is also an important feature in his work in plastic. His correspondence confirms his interest in writing. This is demonstrated by the letter preserved at the Art et marges museum, addressed to Françoise Henrion, the first director of the non-profit organisation. In a frenetic flourish, he sprinkles various references to places in Brussels throughout the letter.
