Alain GENTY

(France, 1948-)

As a young man placed in a psychiatric clinic, he was offered the choice of several artistic techniques, and he chose clay because he could twist it in any direction he wished. At the age of 45, he had an accident while working on a public works project and this obliged him to cease all professional activity. He returned to clay, modelling and produced an astonishing bestiary of increasingly shimmering enamel. Today, he lives with one of his brothers, who was found at a late stage after the siblings had originally been scattered between institutions and foster families. From the living room to the garden, Alain Genty's many ceramics adorn the home. Although he refused to sell his sculptures in order to keep them for himself, he now sells them in order to be able to buy clay and glazes. "I had a hard life (...), I got through it (...), I found my brothers (...), and now I'm happy. That's all I can say and it's good enough".
